Coordinated what? Don’t worry if that is you first response. Just in case you never knew, we have transit in Rutherford and Polk Counties!
In August 2005, the U. S. Congress passed the legislation known as SAFETEA-LU (Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient, Transportation Equity Act), a reauthorization of the Surface Transportation Act. The Act is valid until 2009. SAFETEA-LU requires that beginning in FY 2007, projects selected for funding under the Elderly Individuals with Disabilities (Section 5310), Jobs Access and Reverse Commute (JARC), and New Freedom (NF) programs be “derived from a locally developed, coordinated public transit-human services transportation plan” and that the plan be “developed through a process that includes representatives of public, private, and non-profit transportation and human services providers and participation by members of the public.”
Now thats alot of words and alot of accronyms, but why do I have to partcipate? Basically you have been selected becuase of your role in transportation, senior citizens advocate, advocate for the low income, or becuase you care about something related to transportation.
This process is being led by the RPO (me) with the help of Polk County Transit (Jewell Carswell) and Rutherford County Transit (Gene Adair). We are putting this plan together basically becuase of events in the past 9 months. If you were affected by one of the many plant closings you need to participate. If you or your family is caring for a person with disabilities, is elderly, is looking for work, has trouble finding work becuase of transportation issues, is considered low income, are an advocate for increased transportation options, or care enough about any of the above, you need to participate.
This Blog will be updated periodically as events and meeting dates are set and occur. I promise to try my hardest to keep whomever reads this thing up to date on the process and outcomes. We hope to be able to provide video vignettes about the process and clips of the meetings we will be having over the next few months.
